Self Portrait Paintings

Self portraits are a very popular subject matter for many young artists alike. Younger students particularly enjoy this theme because it allows them to express something that is important to them. Through portraits students can depict special places, remember important events, or illustrate popular activities. For this lesson, students will use tempera paint and brightly colored ink to make portraits of themselves with a favorite toy.

How can I talk about my child’s collage project?

Here are some helpful questions to get the conversation started at home:

  1. Tell me who is in your painting?

  2. Why did you choose to show yourself doing that activity?

  3. What kinds of art materials did you use for this project?

  4. What did you learn about painting?
